How AI extraction actually works
Modern AI document extraction is not OCR with rules. It is a multi-stage pipeline combining several technologies:
- Document classification: the model identifies the document type before any field extraction begins. This prevents the wrong schema being applied to the wrong document.
- Named entity recognition (NER): key fields are identified using contextual understanding, not positional rules. "Invoice Total" and "Amount Due" in different layouts both map to the same output field.
- Table extraction: line items in invoices and order forms require a separate model trained specifically on row-column relationships.
- Validation layer: extracted values are checked against business rules before reaching the destination system.
